Critical Hours Training Conference 2022

OCYI’s Critical Hours Task Group (CHTG) is pleased to host an in-person training conference for critical hours staff on Wednesday, November 2, 2022! Registration is open now and closes at noon on October 25. Details below and send questions to info@growingupgreat.ca

 

Who: This event is for frontline staff at a before/after school programs, recreation programs, homework clubs or tutoring programs, youth drop-in programs, or other programs supporting kids and youth ages 6+!

 

What: A day of professional development training for frontline staff of critical hours programs. An opening keynote will be followed by two workshop blocks. The workshop blocks will feature concurrent sessions for participants to choose from. List of sessions with descriptions are below. Lunch is included.

 

When: Wednesday, November 2, 2022, keynote starts at 9 am and the final session will conclude by 2:30 pm

Keynote: 9-10 am

Workshop Session 1: 10:15-11:45 am

Lunch: 11:45 am to 12:45 pm

Workshop Session 2: 12:45-2:15 pm

 

Where: in person at the Richelieu-Vanier Community Centre, 300 des Pères-Blancs Avenue, Ottawa ON K1L 7L5

 

Why: The last training day CHTG hosted was in 2018, and a lot has happened since then! This is a chance for new and return staff from across Ottawa to come together and learn together.

We are also pleased to offer funding for staffing coverages, up to $100 per attendee, thanks to funding from Crime Prevention Ottawa. Frontline staff development and training improves competencies, skills, knowledge and performance which in turn improves the quality of critical hours programs across our city. Balancing the importance of professional development and the critical need for after school programs in the community, OCYI is committed to supporting organizations with funds to compensate for staffing coverages. This way, program staff can attend training and the programs can still run without disruption. Understanding Youth and Substance Use: Matching Our Response to Youth Need (part 1)

Speaker: Amanda Neilson CYW, BSW, MSW, RSW, Manager of Clinical Services at Rideauwood Addiction and Family Services
Understanding substance use from a trauma informed perspective supports effective interventions for youth at every stage of substance use including those that don’t use at all.
Note: this workshop will be in two parts, with part 1 during the morning session and part 2 in the afternoon session.

Supporting Youth through Play in the Critical Hours

Speaker: Marnie Powers, MEd (in completion), BSW
This workshop will explore the play continuum (ranging from free, unstructured play to playful experiences), the evidence-based benefits of play for children and youth, as well as specific, hands-on approaches to incorporating more play into your everyday programs.
Note: this workshop will take place outside, so dress for the weather!

Trauma Aware Practice: Working with Children and Youth

Speaker: Mandi Pekan, MA, RP Registered Psychotherapist, The Centre for Resilience and Social Development
This training provides an introductory framework to understanding the impacts of trauma and childhood adversity. Participants will gain foundational knowledge and build a trauma-aware lens to nurture safe and caring relationships with children and youth.

 

Afternoon Sessions (12:45-2:15 pm)

Tackling Racism and Oppression through Cultural Humility

Speaker: Samoon Tasmim, MA, PhD (Cand.), RP
The workshop takes a macro look at racism and oppression in the Canadian context and discusses practical ways of anti-oppressive, anti-racism practice with clients through cultural humility. Major themes of discussion are Oppression, Racism, Anti-oppression and Anti-Racism Framework and Cultural Humility.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) front line implementation within community environments

Speaker: Robert Bolduc, C.Psych, Mental Health and Well-Being Lead and Amanda Dzuba, MSW, RSW, CYW, Mental Health Worker, Ottawa Catholic School Board
We will be looking at Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) in community settings and gaining an understanding of what students of all ages are learning through SEL initiatives within our school board.
